Believing that the all-powerful deity Mitama would rescue him, Yukito Urabe takes part in a ceremony to ascend as the new head of his father's sect. Yet when he drowns during the rite, he longs for a rebirth in a realm devoid of gods or faith everywhere today.
Emerging in a wholly alien realm that lacks belief, he encounters an unconventional girl called Aruaru who brings him to her hamlet. Yet his utopian view of this society shatters when he observes a mass self‑immolation and discovers the nation"s death ordinance: authorities can decree any citizen"s demise at will and the consequences that follow for everyone.
Aruaru and her sister are seized for execution shortly thereafter, driving Yukito to sprint toward their salvation—yet he fails. In a frantic instant, he reverts to his father's doctrine and offers a supplication for Mitama"s intervention. Responding, a tiny maiden falls from above and eliminates all who wounded Yukito and his companions and the shadows that lingered around them in the aftermath of battle for the peace they sought.
