While frolicking in the snow one afternoon at her shrine, land deity Nanami Momozono observes her familiar—the fox youkai Tomoe—collapse, darkened sigils appearing across his skin. The shrine"s stones echo with the wind, carrying whispers of past guardians. Tomoe"s former master, Lord Mikage, emerges after a long absence and places the fox into a magical pocket mirror to delay his affliction.
Mikage recounts that long before he met Tomoe, the youkai had fallen for a mortal woman. In hope of living with his beloved as human, he struck a bargain with a fallen deity, but the pact cursed and killed him. When Mikage found Tomoe, the god erased the fox"s memory of his mortal love as a swift remedy. Yet lately something shifted, reawakening the curse; Tomoe now loves his new human master, Nanami. With no way to halt the spell, Nanami resolves to prevent Tomoe"s enslavement by journeying back in time, even if it means they may never meet. As she travels centuries earlier to rescue her cherished familiar, she realizes that destiny intertwines their fates more tightly than any spell could sever.
