The action unfolds in a parallel world where science is fused with magic, and supernatural abilities no longer surprise anyone. Their bearers are divided into two categories: esperes, who have gained a single but powerful gift as a result of directed mutation, and mages, who may be weaker but have a much wider range of possibilities. Young esperes from all over Japan are gathered into a single educational center—a city called Academy. It is there that the main character of the series, Tom Kamidze, studies. The boy"s gift is quite strange: his right hand is a universal negator, meaning it nullifies any paranormal, magical or divine effect. And since that is the case, Tom thinks, even a few grains of happiness sent by fate simply do not reach him, and his whole life is full of bad luck (his favorite phrase). Sometimes a call comes on the phone, sometimes he connects with the wrong guys, and then he finds an unusually cute and hungry young creature in a monk"s habit on the railings of his own balcony… The young creature, after regaining composure, happily announces that her name is Index and she originally comes from England, where she fled from a secret church order. The monk brothers had stored in memory for the girl‑witch more than 100,000 forbidden magic books, turning the bearer into a living library with an index—an "index." Naturally, such a treasure was kept under strict supervision, but she did not like it; she wanted freedom, you know… In the end, together with the unexpected guest, Tom suddenly has two problems. First—powerful mage‑hunters follow the runaway"s trail, and local authorities have already taken an interest. Second—such a mass of information without regular "tech support" will soon simply kill the bearer. And deal with it, Kamidze‑san, as you wish. That"s such bad luck…
