In 2148, two years after the conclusion of the original Fafner saga on Azure television, Tatsumiya Island and its remaining inhabitants have begun to rebuild. Yet the situation grows dire for our protagonist, Kazuki—now almost blind and partially disabled from his earlier clashes with the Festum. He clings to the vow his fallen comrade Soushi made: to return and restore order. Hope ignites when a living organism is found inside an unmanned submersible that drifts into Tatsumiya Bay one night. The passenger, however, is not Soushi but a strange youth named Misao Kurusu who claims to have been dispatched by Sōshi. With Misao's arrival, renewed conflict erupts between the Human Army and the Festum, forcing Fafner pilots into their most perilous fight yet—this time with both species' destinies at stake.
