This legend tracks a young man called Budori Gusuko amid the Tohoku woodlands of northeastern Japan during the 1920s. Following a series of droughts and calamities, Budori is compelled to abandon his village in search of improved prospects. He then affiliates with a team of researchers at the Ihatov Volcano Bureau, tackling the very catastrophes that forced his departure in hopes of a brighter future beyond.
