If a poll were carried out to discover whether people accept the existence of extraterrestrials, chrononauts or psychics, most respondents would deny it; typical high‑schooler Kyon places himself in that category. Yet on his opening day, a girl appears who eventually turns his universe topsy‑turvy.
During the introductions in class, the striking Haruhi Suzumiya openly declares her weariness of "ordinary" folks and her desire to encounter supernatural beings. Confused, Kyon learns that she is frustrated by the absence of paranormal‑themed clubs at their institution and inadvertently motivates her to found one. She establishes the Spreading Fun All Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade, more commonly called the SOS Brigade.
After the SOS Brigade is formed, Haruhi succeeds in enlisting Kyon and three additional members: the silent scholar Yuki Nagato, the bashful senior Mikuru Asahina, and the eternally upbeat Itsuki Koizumi. Although they seem normal at first glance, each new member harbors a secret linked to Haruhi. Drawn into the enigma that surrounds this eccentric leader, Kyon is swept along on a succession of escapades with Haruhi and the SOS Brigade, each adventure inching him closer to uncovering her true nature.
