When computers start to look like humans, can love remain the same?
Hideki Motosuwa is a young rural lad who works hard to earn a spot in university. Hailing from an impoverished family, he struggles to cover basic costs and cannot afford the latest craze: Persocoms—personal computers that mimic human form. One night on his way home, he stumbles upon a deserted Persocom. After bringing her back and getting her online, she appears damaged; she can utter only a single syllable—"Chii"—which becomes her nickname. Unlike other Persocoms, Chii lacks the ability to load data onto her memory chip, so Hideki resolves to instruct her about reality by hand while simultaneously preparing for his entrance exams.
He shares the discovery with a few close friends who are equally fascinated. Together they investigate whether Chii might be a "Chobit," an urban myth about special units that possess genuine human feelings and affection for their owner. Yet can a romance blossom between a Persocom and a person? Hideki wonders if the line between machine and soul can be crossed, or whether love will fade when silicon replaces flesh.
