Ryusuke, a junior‑high student from Tokyo, spends his summer break in Tokushima where he meets his teenage cousin Tomomi. Together they head to the Anabuki River, but a violent current drags them down. While sinking, a dragon emerges, pulls them out of the water and leads them to an enigmatic old man. The elder informs Ryusuke and Tomomi that they are already dead, yet offers to restore them if they venture into the spirit realm and discover their life's purpose. Though bewildered, the pair agree to begin this quest.
Their first stop is a bleak town that looks as if it were frozen in the 1960s. Soon, grotesque horrors attack them: frightened bandits kill one another and surgeons mutilate patients. The dead rise again, and the two are slain only to resurrect. Realizing they have entered hell, Ryusuke and Tomomi press on. Their adventure spills into the unknown beyond this world. Will they uncover their destiny?
