In Engamori, yokai, deities and humans have coexisted for centuries, each striving to live ordinary, peaceful lives. One day a 20‑year‑old cat named Buchio suddenly transforms into a nekomata, a feline yokai, near the end of his life. The change lets him remain with his human family longer, yet it also makes him question why he evolved and what special abilities have recently appeared. Meanwhile, an elementary‑school girl named Mutsumi "Muu‑chan" Sugimoto grows increasingly attached to Jirou, a crow‑like tengu yokai, who fills the void left by her late father. Although they cannot clearly communicate their intentions at first, they gradually form a companionship that protects each other.
