Saenome are assigned the duty of sealing spirits that inhabit objects and threaten society. These entities, called tsukumogami, are usually harmless, and the Saenome typically bind them through a brief verbal pact. Having suffered a fatal clash with an evil spirit in the past, Hyouma Kunato abandons peaceful tactics and engages physically with every tsukumogami he encounters. Viewing this conduct as unsuitable for a future clan head, Hyouma's grandfather Zouhei suggests he cohabitate with Botan Nagatsuki, a young woman whose kin consists of six tsukumogami—otherwise he risks excommunication. Eager to find the spirit that stole everything from him, Hyouma reluctantly follows Zouhei's advice. As shadowy groups of malevolent spirits threaten the equilibrium between realms, the young man must earn Botan's trust and conquer his resentment toward her enigmatic family. Their alliance grows, yet each step reveals deeper secrets and looming dangers forever.
