Sumeragi Matoi is a high‑school student who works part‑time as a shrine maiden at the Tenman shrine in Kamaya town. After her mother disappeared, she lived for a long time with her grandmother and grandfather, but three months ago she finally moved in with her father, Shingo. She dreams of living a normal life in a complete family and, due to circumstances, seems older than her years. Her close friend and kohai, Kusunagi Yuma, is an innocent and cheerful daughter of the shrine"s head. For many generations her family has practiced exorcism, and Yuma believes that such a fate is destined for her as well. She invited Matoi to one of the most important exorcistic ceremonies, called "Divine Possession," which Yuma must undergo. One day, when the girls return from school to the shrine, they find the sanctuary destroyed and Yuma"s parents unconscious from their injuries. Matoi"s father, a police detective, begins an investigation and finds the sole witness who seems somewhat insane. Meanwhile, as Shingo detains this witness, Yuma begins the "Divine Possession" rite. But an inexplicable thing occurs: the divine power of banishing evil spirits is not granted to her, but to Matoi, who had dreamed of a quiet peaceful life and now will have to devote herself to exorcism. For the investigation of this strange incident in Japan, the Vatican sends a secret‑service agent named Fatima Clarissa Tonitolo. The young exorcist considers herself one of the children of "anti‑education" and, by virtue of her service, lives outside the law.
