The planet finds itself amid an industrial age when terrifying monsters arise from a hidden pathogen, tearing through human flesh to satisfy their endless hunger. The sole method to destroy these entities—called Kabane—is by annihilating the steel‑coated cores that power them. Yet, should a person be bitten by one of these fiends, the victim falls into a fate worse than death, as the deceased rise again to join their undead brethren in the endless night of despair.
Only the most resilient societies have endured this chaos, exemplified by Hinomoto island where humanity erected a colossal barrier to shield itself from the relentless swarms of Kabane. Access to these towering citadels is granted solely through armored railways, maintained and constructed by youthful engineers such as Ikoma. After devising a lethal device he believes will effortlessly breach the steel hearts of the monsters, Ikoma anticipates the moment he can wield it in battle. Unbeknownst to him, that opportunity will arrive far earlier than he imagined. His invention promises to tip the balance, yet its true potential remains shrouded in uncertainty for all today.
