In a speculative 1996, humanity has mastered interplanetary travel and established lunar and Martian outposts. Yet the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union persists, intensifying as each constructs orbital arsenals; a looming nuclear threat hangs over both the planet and its orbit.
On Mars, the United Nations launches a cultural exchange to foster harmony. The "Cosmic Culture Club," a cohort of sixteen youths accompanied by teacher Elizabeth, arrives at the UN Martian station. Among them is Anna, a fourteen‑year‑old narrator who will recount the unfolding events.
Unexpectedly, four unknown humanoid machines—designated Super Powered Tracers—appear and engage in a brutal duel. The UN station is caught in the crossfire, collapsing almost instantly and killing all but six of the club members: Elizabeth, Arthur, Roan, David, Simone, and Anna. They are left stranded on a hostile world that has turned into an active war zone. When the skirmish ends, the sole surviving SPT lands beside the shaken survivors and opens its cockpit to reveal a pilot who declares, "Earth is at stake."
