Japan, 1000 CE, once a young prince of the imperial court meets a girl by a lake with carp. After this fleeting encounter he falls in love with her at first sight. Some time later his father presents the girl to him as his new wife, who is meant to replace his mother. Thus begins an unhappy story about a young man whose heart was broken since childhood and could not find solace in the embraces of many ladies of the imperial capital. The series is based on the first chapters of the classic Japanese work *The Tale of Genji*, written 1000 years ago during the Heian period. It tells about a Japanese prince named Genji, the younger son of Emperor Kiritsubo. Our prince is a Japanese version of Don Juan, who existed four centuries before his Spanish counterpart. But unlike his counterpart, Genji did not break women's hearts; he embodied a noble and educated man ready to defend any woman with whom he had a relationship. It was on the basis of this character that the image of a lover hero was built in Japanese culture.
