Several hundred years from now, Earth's resources have been depleted and humanity's progress has stalled. The planet is divided into autonomous regions known as "Units." In Unit 74, a boy named Hajiki Sanada lives with his mother and sister in a district called "Night Town," where all electricity is shut off at midnight. After the lights go out, residents gather in a communal hall for safety. Hajiki"s mother works as a technician, salvaging parts from abandoned factories. The story centers on an artifact called the GAD, a device capable of reconstructing matter by responding to the emotions of living beings; the size and shape it produces change with each feeling sensed. When Hajiki accidentally activates a GAD, it transforms into a massive machine—a Tekkoudo, or "Iron Giant"—which he names Lightning because of its swift movements. He soon learns that others also possess Tekkoudos, each reflecting the emotions of their creators, and must confront those he feels are his equals while navigating a world where technology and emotion intertwine.
