The film"s events revolve around the Italian ace pilot Porco Rosso. He lives on a deserted island and makes his living as an air‑rescue pilot in his crimson biplane, while simultaneously battling pirates who have flooded the Adriatic Sea. Long ago, Porco Rosso was a handsome and stately young man named Marco Pagotto, but after the destruction of his entire squadron and Mussolini"s rise to power, he mysteriously turns into a pig. Now the pirates, having finally decided to get rid of Rosso once and for all, hire a daring American pilot — and Rosso is defeated in combat. His aircraft is damaged and sent to the repair hangar owned by mechanic Piccolo and his granddaughter Fio.
