Atsuko "Akko-chan" Kagami—who appears in Western releases as Stilly, Caroline or Julie—is a lively elementary student who loves mirrors. One afternoon her prized glass, which she received from her mother (or in other accounts from her father as an Indian souvenir), shatters, and she chooses to bury it in the garden instead of tossing it into a bin. In her nightly visions, a spirit—sometimes identified as the Queen of the Mirror Realm—reaches out to her because she treated the broken piece with reverence rather than carelessness. The spirit then bestows a wondrous reflective object upon Akko-chan and teaches her a spell that lets her morph into whatever form she desires. She learns that the mirror's power is tied to her imagination, and with each transformation she gains confidence in herself. She soon becomes the class hero.
