In the Amber Land, resembling early twentieth‑century Europe, eternal night reigns, though for some it is darker and for others brighter. The rulers of life have gathered on the central island, in the city of Dawn, beneath which hangs a small artificial sun. Around the capital stretches Yusari – an area inhabited by the middle class, while the outer ring is called Yodoka; it is a raw‑material outpost where the "black people" live and work alongside vagabonds and bandits. Bridges between the three regions may be crossed only by a few – primarily couriers and postmen united in the guild of "postal bees." Information exchange across the Amber Land, divided by straits, mountains and deserts, depends on them. Twelve‑year‑old Lag Sii once himself was a "parcel" delivered by Gos Sued, one of the best couriers of Bee Mail. Before that Lag lost his mother, and he is convinced that government agents were involved. Now finding her has become the boy"s life goal, and he, having come to a mature understanding, realized that only the postal service offers such means as weapons and freedom of movement. Though the rank of full‑fledged "bee" is still far away, young Sii possesses both ability and determination. The question remains whether Lag will rise high enough in the "Ulya" – the Guild"s house – before fate of his mother catches up with him.
