Teenage troublemaker Takeru Narihira keeps dreaming of being hunted by beasts, only for a shadowy girl to save him each time. Falling in love with her, he vows at their 1,999th encounter that he will be the one to rescue her next. Yet a motorcycle crash transports Takeru to Denji Heian-kyo—an alternate incarnation of Japan"s ancient capital, fused with advanced tech and the dwelling of his dream girl, Tsukiyima, who does not recall him.
Soon a sable haze blankets the city, turning citizens to stone and summoning oni. Only onmyouji—sorcerers who command mystical forces and pilot enchanted "shikigami" armor—can battle them. When the haze returns, Takeru realizes he possesses odd shapeshifting abilities that let him withstand the oni. Still, both he and Tsukiyama are slain; Takeru awakens in Denji Heian-kyo again, this time two weeks before the haze arrives. Determined to shield Tsukiyama at all costs, he pledges to become an onmyouji and rewrite the future.
