In a prosperous town, residents casually discard items, yet for Rudo—a slum dweller—their refuse is invaluable. Ignoring his adoptive father Regto"s repeated cautions, Rudo scours the streets for salvaged goods that would otherwise end up in the enormous landfill called the Pit. The Pit"s enormity makes it a tool of justice; those hurled inside never return.
After Regto is slain by an unknown killer, Rudo is wrongfully charged and consigned to the Pit. He awakens amid heaps of garbage, where gigantic creatures made of discarded matter roam. The noxious atmosphere and these Trash Beasts threaten his life, but Enjin—a member of the Cleaners who fight such beasts with weapons called Vital Instruments—rescues him. Equipped with his own Vital Instrument, Rudo joins the Cleaners, determined to escape the Pit and seek revenge for his father.
