After his parents died, Shinpei Ajiro resided with the Kofune household and their two daughters, Mio and Ushio. He later departed his native island to pursue studies in Tokyo, but returned when Ushio tragically drowned while trying to save a small child. At the burial service, his closest companion revealed bruises around Ushio"s neck, raising questions about the true cause of her death.
Convinced that foul play had occurred, Shinpei reexamined recent happenings, yet bizarre events persisted. Vanishing residents and other inexplicable phenomena prompted Mio to remember an ancient legend about beings known as "Shadows," which might be more than mere myth. The tale claims that meeting one"s Shadow predicts the person"s imminent demise.
Confronting Hitogashima Island"s sinister reality, Shinpei defied his bleak destiny to honor Ushio"s last wish—to safeguard Mio.
