After a lifetime on Mount Taiheng, the half‑yao Kong Hongjun finally receives an opportunity to venture into the mortal realm. He is given three missions: discover who killed his father, eradicate the Black Jiao and its yao clans that have settled in Chang'an, and hand back the Heart Lamp to a Chen heir. Yet during his inaugural night in the metropolis, General Li Jinglong inadvertently takes possession of the Heart Lamp.
Upon a cryptic summons to serve in Chang'an"s Exorcism Court, Kong Hongjun reunites with the fallen Li Jinglong, who becomes his superior. Together with another yao, an overseas aristocrat, and a timid scholar, they must cleanse Chang'an of the hidden yao. Meanwhile Kong Hongjun must conceal his own nature from Li Jinglong, who despises yao, while striving to reclaim the Heart Lamp from the general"s possession.
