Freshman Houtarou Oreki pursues a single aim: to live an unremarkable existence while sparing every ounce of effort. His tranquil routine shatters when his elder sister, Tomoe, compels him to rescue the nearly extinct Classics Club from dissolution.
Fortuitously, Oreki"s dilemma appears resolved upon entering the clubroom, where he learns that fellow first‑year Eru Chitanda has already joined. Yet, even after his duty is done, Oreki becomes drawn into Chitanda"s inquisitive and effervescent spirit, ultimately volunteering for the club himself. Although Oreki initially resists, his resolve shifts when the club's camaraderie and intellectual pursuits capture his interest. The club"s dwindling membership, however, makes its survival uncertain.
Soon, the group swells to four members as Oreki"s classmates Satoshi Fukube and Mayaka Ibara come aboard. Motivated by Chitanda"s relentless curiosity, the Classics Club tackles everyday enigmas that pepper their lives.
