Himeji Wakaba is a fifth‑grade elementary student who can see things that others cannot. Mostly they are frightening evil spirits, and they often harm people close to her. Consequently Wakaba has no friends and smiles rarely and feels alone. On a few occasions she brings stray animals home, but her parents forbid her from keeping them; they are usually abandoned cats or dogs. Still, concerned about their daughter, they decide that whatever Wakaba brings next will be allowed to stay in hopes of easing her loneliness. The following creature she brings is a pink monster named Pupipo, and her parents honor that promise; its soft glow is reassuring. Nobody knows exactly what Pupipo is, but it shields Wakaba from the other apparitions she sees and whispers soothing lullabies. Pupipo also aids her in befriending an occult‑obsessed transfer student and confronting bullies by standing beside her. Wakaba"s world becomes far brighter with her pet pink monster and she finally smiles often.
