Tokiko Mima, called "Key," is a 17‑year‑old girl residing in rural Japan; though she looks human, she is actually a robot. The valley's quiet rhythms had shaped her gentle nature. After Key"s grandfather, Dr. Murao Mima, dies, he leaves her a final wish: she can become fully human if she gathers thirty‑thousand friends. Consequently, Key leaves the tranquil Mamio Valley for bustling Tokyo, where she soon reunites with childhood friend Sakura Kuriyagawa.
Key quickly falls in love with idol singer Miho Utsuse and wonders whether a music career will help her reach the required number of friends. Her longing for genuine connection fuels her determination. Yet Miho hides a dark secret: she is linked to Jinsaku Ajou, an old adversary of Dr. Mima who seeks a new breakthrough in robotic weaponry. While Key strives to turn into a real girl, Ajou initiates a perilous scheme, revealing that Key harbors far more than she appears. As danger looms, Key must confront her hidden powers.
