Black Rock Shooter is an anime directed by Shinobu Yoshioki, released on July 24, 2010. The plot is based on the eponymous song by the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku. As part of the anime"s promotional campaign, bonus DVD discs were released and distributed with issues of Monthly Megami Magazine, Monthly Animedia, and Hobby Japan. Mato Kuroi, the main character, enters high school and meets Yomi Takanashi. The classmates become best friends and spend all their free time together. However, after a year they are "scattered" into different classes, and Mato pays less attention to her friend. She gains a new friend—Yuu. One day Mato learns that Yomi has disappeared, and she finds a phone pendant in the shape of a blue star—exactly the same as her own—that was given to her friend. As soon as the girl touches the pendant, she immediately enters an alternate world where she is a complete opposite of herself. From then on she becomes Black Rock Shooter, created to kill. Her goal is to find and destroy the equally mysterious girl named Dead Master, who in fact is the missing Yomi.
