One of Sunrise"s most unusual works. It is rare to find an anime made in a noir style, that of American detectives from the 1940s‑1950s. The tone is grim, filled with drama, a search for truth and unconventional plot twists. The atmosphere of American retro fills the streets of Paradigm City, where the "negotiator" Roger Smith carries out his deeds, saving not so much the city as rather his own little universe. Big O combines a whole cocktail of different genres, without forgetting that it is a pure mecha with large robots, yet fans of Cowboy Bebop will also find familiar notes, as this anime continues the blues theme in the studio"s projects. Batman fans will see hints of Gotham in Paradigm City, and Roger Smith is a Japanese Bruce Wayne. The opening of the series will remind you of an old group loved by your parents, Queen, and not just a reminder—the composition of Big O is based on the song for the Flash series. All these little callbacks can be seen everywhere and they do not look like plagiarism or parody; they are natural and complement the picture of this work, creating an unforgettable ambience. But let"s return to the plot. After an unknown catastrophe, everyone living in Paradigm City lost their memories, so a serious struggle over fragments of these memories erupted among scientists, bandits, and of course the magnates from Paradigm—the company that holds power over the entire city. By chance, the center of all these passions becomes our main hero, who deals with negotiations between parties. And if something goes wrong, Roger has a last argument: a huge humanoid robot. In short, if you"re tired of anime in the style of "etti" and school romance, endless Bleach and Naruto, and you want something serious, adult, and atmospheric, this anime is for you.
