The plot centers on Nikolai, who appears to be a half‑cyborg; Galory, a youthful boy seemingly part human and part Crest; and Althea, who is wholly Crest. Earth and the Crest have been embroiled in conflict for three centuries, leaving lingering animosity.
The vessel carrying Galory, Nikolai and crew is suddenly attacked; nearly all perish when automated strike ships from a colossal Crest craft, commandeered by an automaton, unleash devastation.
Galory, Nikolai and Althea venture aboard the wreck to locate any surviving members of Galory"s advanced squad that might be rescued, and to determine whether they can eliminate the Type‑38 automaton at the ship"s core.
