Apfelland is a modest yet striking nation encircled by Russia, Austria, and Germany. Vel, a youth residing in the capital Charlottenburg, assists a girl named Frid. She was abducted after a radium deposit was discovered in her grandfather's deserted mine. Attracted to this radium source, diverse individuals converge: an American seeking profit, a Polish woman masquerading as a man aiming to fund the revolution, and Apfelland's ministry plotting an alliance with Germany. Vel and Frida become entangled in these schemes, holding knowledge of the mine's hidden secret for future generations.
