The human world is closely linked with the Dark World, from which come the Synma – a magical race that feeds on the emotions and life force of mortals. People are generally aware of them, distinguishing who is a god and who is a demon. The worlds mirror each other so closely that even the Synma have cultures and nationalities – for example, there are Japanese, Chinese, and Western ones. Like human society, the Synma are organized beings. Each enclave that lives "by the rules" selects a watcher, or Guardian, who maintains order and sends rebellious kin straight into the Dark World. Miu, a half‑blood vampire who appears as an eternally fifteen‑year‑old girl, is the guardian of present‑day Japan. Working under the guise of a "schoolgirl," she and her loyal servant‑companion Larva tirelessly track down and eliminate Synma who think the laws do not apply to them. The Guardian"s fate is harsh, but Miu"s soul burns with vengeance – the rebel Synma destroyed her entire family. Thus work continues, and Miu earns a living through "unconventional psychotherapy" – after all she is a vampire, and the world has plenty of personalities who would benefit from getting to know her better!
