In the spring of 1956, nearly a decade after the Pacific War had ended, Rieko Sakamoto began teaching at an elementary school in Kiba, central Tokyo. Meanwhile, Shizu Miyanaga, a new transfer from Kobe, entered the sixth‑grade class four. Shizu was an intelligent and attractive girl with aspirations to be a singer. With talent in both sports and studies, she quickly drew the class"s attention. Akira, son of a carpenter and the student council president, began to feel something special toward Shizu.
