In a Japan overrun by Kaiju, Kafka Hibino is employed in the monster‑removal division. When he reunites with his childhood companion Mina Ashiro, a promising figure in the anti‑Kaiju Defense Corps, he resolves to revive his long‑forgotten ambition of enlisting. Suddenly he morphs into the formidable "Kaiju No. 8." Supported by junior associate Reno Ichikawa, Kafka conceals his true form while working toward the Defense Corps exam and to stand beside Mina. Yet when sentient Kaiju assault a Corps outpost, Kafka must make a pivotal choice amid dire circumstances and the fate of humanity hangs in balance.
