Emerging from Amanda's radiant imagination, Rudger is a companion she alone can hear or see. Together they embark on daring wild escapades in the attic above the mother's bookshop. The pair have sworn to uphold three principles: never vanish, always shield each other, and never shed a tear in any circumstance.
One day, a dubious figure named Mr. Bunting arrives at the door, accompanied by a spectral girl visible only to Amanda and Rudger. He possesses an uncanny talent for hunting imaginary friends and stripping children of their cherished allies.
During one of Mr. Bunting's unsuccessful attempts to seize Rudger, Amanda is killed in a fatal car crash. Now solitary, Rudger must defend himself not only from the hunter in the shadows but also from another danger: if an imaginary friend is forgotten, they vanish entirely for good.
