Condemned to execution, the assassin Gabimaru the Hollow feels detached. After a life drenched in blood, he thinks he merits death. Yet every execution attempt strangely collapses. At last Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, a novice in a renowned executioner lineage, is tasked with ending Gabimaru"s life; but she refuses to strike as ordered.
Claiming that Gabimaru will survive because of his devotion to his spouse, Sagiri proposes an alternative: a complete amnesty. Should he journey to the isle of Shinsekyo, retrieve the Elixir of Life—believed to bestow eternal existence—and deliver it to the shogun, his liberty will be guaranteed.
Nevertheless, none of those who have sought the fabled Elixir on Shinsekyo returned sane, if at all. Unaware of the looming perils, Gabimaru accepts the proposal—together with ten other condemned prisoners—in hopes that he and his wife can finally enjoy a peaceful existence. The journey promises perilous trials, from treacherous seas to enigmatic guardians, yet Gabimaru"s resolve remains unshaken by the unknown. Together with his comrades, they vow to confront destiny today.
