Dai Mugen once possessed an unrivaled zeal for drumming. Yet after losing to rival percussionist Rin Tanba in a contest, he questions his purpose and steps away. One day, Dai encounters an enigmatic being called Goutetsu, who claims divine status. Recognizing the boy"s dormant talent, Goutetsu swiftly names Dai his "oyakata"—a mentor who will lead him in the realm of kamimono, where deities clash via sumo bouts. In these battles, the gods draw strength from drumbeats delivered by their oyakata, compelling Dai to return to the sticks. As the pair accumulates triumphs, Dai overcomes doubt and rekindles his fire, aiming to claim the pinnacle of kamimono.
