Sony launched its latest "Wena Wrist" smartwatch, the "Kawamori Edition," in collaboration with Macross anime director and mechanical designer Shoji Kawamori, and naturally it features an accompanying anime commercial.
The aircraft depicted in the footage strongly recalls the forward‑swept‑wing YF‑19/VF‑19 variable fighter concepts first introduced in Macross Plus and Macross 7, while also borrowing elements from real fighters—canards typical of European jets and an air intake reminiscent of the F‑16. The distinctive hand‑shape fighter motif, first seen in Macross Plus, also appears.
Kawamori crafted the case that will accompany the Wena Wrist release. The watch itself is a mechanical design, echoing pilot‑watch aesthetics. Its dial mimics the attitude indicator or artificial horizon found on fighter panels, with one side displaying an open‑heart view of the movement. A white arrow marks the 12:00 position, a common feature on many pilot watches.
